New York CNN —Clear is a service that lets people skip the security line at airports with nothing but a biometric scan and $189. Clear, a publicly-traded security company, lets members jump the line at airports, sports, concerts and other venues. About 10% of California travelers are Clear members, according to a legislative analysis of the bill. The bill, which appears to be the first in the United States, won’t block Clear at California airports, Newman said. But Clear, and major airlines like Delta, California airports, and business groups like the California Chamber of Commerce oppose the bill.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — A former correctional officer at a federal California women's prison known for numerous misconduct allegations was sentenced to six years in prison for sexually abusing five inmates, federal officials announced Wednesday. Nakie Nunley, who supervised inmates at the Federal Correctional Institution, Dublin, becomes the seventh correctional officer sentenced to prison for sexually abusing inmates, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. A 2022 investigation by The Associated Press revealed a cultural of rampant sexual abuse and cover-up at the prison. U.S. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said in a statement that Nunley “egregiously exploited” his power to abuse inmates and retaliate against those who spoke up. Nunley pleaded guilty last year to four counts of sexual abuse of a ward and five lesser felonies of abusive sexual contact of five women.

With Sen. Laphonza Butler not running for a full term, the California race remains wide open. Former MLB All-Star Steve Garvey, a Republican, jumped into the Senate race earlier this month. Sen. Laphonza Butler, center, will not run for a full Senate term in 2024. There will be two Senate races on the November 2024 ballot: a special election to fill the Senate term through January 2025 and a general election for the full Senate term ending in January 2031. Under California election rules, the two candidates who receive the most votes advance to the November general election, regardless of party. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former baseball MVP Steve Garvey joined the race Tuesday to succeed the late California Sen. Dianne Feinstein, giving Republicans a splash of star quality on the ballot in a heavily Democratic state where the GOP hasn’t won a Senate race in 35 years. He did not answer directly when asked if he considered himself part of the Trump wing of the GOP. In California's last two Senate races, GOP candidates performed so poorly that only Democrats appeared on the November ballot. The last Republican to win a Senate race in the state was in 1988. Garvey confirmed in June that he was considering entering the Senate race, and his candidacy was widely expected.
